DRIVER INTERVIEW

How did you find Brisca F1 Stock Cars?
Started watching Stockcars in 1970 aged 7. My Dad used to take me and my brother Steve to Belle Vue and I was instantly hooked.

What gave you the incentive to race
We only did the Belle Vue meetings as it was only 3 miles away. I met Derek Jackson ex54 when I was about 12 and started hanging around his garage at weekends and a couple of years later met Terry McNulty and started going to meetings with him.

First Car - Built, Bought or Borrowed
At 16 I took out a licence (479) but the car I was supposed to drive developed engine problems that proved to be terminal and I never raced it. After dabbling in Saloon Stox in the mid 80's I gave up and just spectated. In 1992 after too many beers, My brother Steve, myself and a good friend decided to have a go at F1 before we were all to old. The plan was to build our own chassis and use the engine from Steve's 1970 Camaro. (which he still has, minus the engine). After talking to a few drivers, John Wright 128 agreed to let us measure up his car and so the build began. The car took over a year to build and finally hit the tracks in 1994 with Steve and myself sharing the driving. We shared the car for the first year but I acquired the ex Andy RobinsonJayne Bean chassis for 1995 and so we had a car each. I used this until a sponsor bought me a part built FWJ chassis in 1997 which was originally being built for Shane Dorrell. The car was finished off and is the last car I ever raced until I retired in 2002 due to health problems. The car was split and sold, Derek Wass bought the engine and gearbox and Carl Gibson bought the chassis. The chassis was later bought back in 2010 and is the car currently being raced by my nephew Rob Jacklin.

Memory of your first race.
First meeting was Stoke 1994 and I started at the back behind John Lund. Lundy did the rolling lap that slow that the white tops were on my back bumper as the green flag dropped. ( I might aswell have started on pole). The other memory from this meeting was the throttle sticking fully open in the GN and hitting the fence flat out bringing the fence down.

Best Racing Memory
Best moment in racing would be winning the final at Sheffield 1998. I managed to hold off all the superstars after a yellow flag and took the win. Biggest influences on racing career, watching Stu Smith and being in awe of his talent, FWJ for help and advice, Dave Berresford for help, advice and a great friend, Phil Haigh for his never give in approach.

Worst Racing Memory
Worst moment would be winning the meeting final at Coventry World Final night, blowing the engine up in the process, only to fail the post race weigh in.

Reason for Retiring
As mentioned earlier I retired in 2002 due to health problems and the new chassis I was in the process of building went to Mark Brightmore ex477.

After Retiring - What Then?
I'm still actively involved with the Ministox. My nephew Sam Jacklin's mini was built by me and I help maintain it week in week out and mechanic for him when I attend. I still love watching F1 and admire the car building skills of the top men, but I still wonder how I had the balls to race myself!!!!
